China Urges Restraint in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and Calls for UN Action
China's Special Envoy for the Middle East Issue, Zhai Jun, expressed deep concern over the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Palestine, as well as between Israel and Lebanon, and called for restraint from all relevant parties, particularly Israel, during a group meeting with diplomatic envoys of Arab countries and a representative from the League of Arab States in China on Friday.
The meeting was held upon request to address the recent tensions in the region, with Israeli forces storming the Al-Aqsa Mosque and triggering confrontations. The Arab side emphasized that Israel's attempts to change the status of religious holy sites in Jerusalem are in violation of relevant United Nations (UN) resolutions, and that the international community has a responsibility to take action to stop Israel's provocative acts.
Zhai Jun emphasized that the pressing task at hand is to keep the situation under control and called for all relevant parties, particularly Israel, to exercise calm and avoid actions that may further heighten tensions or escalate the situation. He also highlighted that China has actively responded to the call of Arab states and has asked the UN Security Council to hold emergency consultations on the Israel-Palestine situation, along with countries including the United Arab Emirates, in efforts to de-escalate the situation.
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has raised concerns globally, and China's call for restraint and diplomatic efforts to address the situation reflects its commitment to peace and stability in the region.
