Miss World 2025 in Telangana Sparks Political Storm Amid Fiscal Concerns

Telangana is gearing up to host the prestigious Miss World 2025 contest from May 7 to May 31, an event touted by the ruling Congress government as a golden opportunity to boost tourism and showcase the state's rich cultural heritage. However, the ₹200 crore budget allocated for the pageant has ignited a heated political debate, with the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) fiercely criticizing the expenditure amidst the state's financial challenges.

BRS's Critique

BRS leader K.T. Rama Rao has sharply questioned the allocation, labeling it "perverse logic" to prioritize a beauty contest over addressing pressing issues such as drought relief and financial support for struggling farmers. He compared the expenditure to the ₹46 crore spent on the Formula E race, highlighting the disparity and questioning the necessity of spending over four times as much on the pageant.

Rao and other opposition leaders argue that the funds could have been better utilized to address the ₹71,000 crore revenue shortfall and the backlog in salary and pension payments for government employees. They have also called for increased support to farmers, advocating compensation of ₹25,000 per acre for those affected by drought conditions.

Congress Defends the Initiative

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and his Congress government have defended the decision, emphasizing that the event is a strategic move to attract global attention, investment, and tourism. According to the government, only ₹27 crore has been directly allocated from the state treasury, while the remaining amount is expected to be covered through sponsorships and private funding.

Congress officials argue that the pageant will spotlight rural Telangana, particularly its handloom industry, eco-tourism destinations, and iconic heritage sites. They believe the event will bolster the state’s global image and create long-term economic benefits for various sectors, including hospitality, retail, and local arts.

Rural Telangana in Focus

As part of the event, participants will visit rural areas to showcase Telangana’s culture and traditions. Initiatives include promoting eco-tourism at tiger reserves, showcasing handloom sarees from Pochampally, and hosting cultural programs at the historic Ramappa Temple. The government asserts that these activities will stimulate local economies and provide a global platform for artisans and small businesses.

Miss World and Political Fallout

Reigning Miss World, Krystyna Pyszkova, has already visited Telangana, drawing significant media attention. While the Congress government remains optimistic about the event's potential to enhance Telangana's global footprint, the opposition continues to target the administration's fiscal priorities, framing the pageant as an extravagant expenditure at a time of economic strain.

As the event approaches, the political climate in Telangana remains tense, with both parties positioning themselves for electoral battles that may be shaped by the outcome of this high-profile contest.
