Tehran, May 15, 2025 — A senior Iranian official has announced that Tehran is prepared to finalize a nuclear agreement if the West agrees to significant sanctions relief. The statement comes amid escalating international tensions over Iran's nuclear program and the prolonged impasse in negotiations.
Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, emphasized that Iran remains committed to peaceful nuclear development and is ready to return to compliance under the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), provided that sanctions impacting the Iranian economy are lifted.
“Our nation has endured years of economic pressure, and we seek a path forward that ensures both the lifting of unjust sanctions and the recognition of our sovereign rights,” said Bagheri Kani.
This development follows months of indirect talks between Iranian and U.S. diplomats, mediated by European and Middle Eastern intermediaries. However, disagreements over the sequencing of sanctions relief and Iran’s compliance have repeatedly stalled progress.
U.S. officials have expressed cautious optimism but insist that Iran must first scale back its uranium enrichment levels and provide greater transparency to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Critics within Iran argue that any agreement must secure long-term economic benefits and protections against future unilateral sanctions. Meanwhile, hawkish elements in Washington and allied nations remain skeptical of Tehran’s intentions, urging the Biden administration to maintain a firm stance.
