Russia Slams Israel’s ‘Unprovoked’ Attack on Iran as UN Charter Violation, Defends Tehran’s ‘Legitimate Security Interests’
Dateline: UNITED NATIONS —
Russia’s UN envoy has fiercely condemned Israel’s recent strike on Iran as an “unprovoked aggression” and a “gross violation of the UN Charter,” while framing Tehran as a victim of Western-backed destabilization.
Speaking at an emergency Security Council session, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused Israel of “reckless escalation” and insisted Iran had “the legitimate right to self-defense and regional security cooperation.”
“This attack was a blatant breach of international law, orchestrated to further undermine regional stability,” Nebenzia declared. “Iran’s defensive partnerships in the region are lawful, whereas Israel’s actions—enabled by its supporters—only fuel chaos.”
The strike, which targeted military and nuclear facilities inside Iran, has drawn sharp divisions in the Council. While Russia, China, and several non-aligned states framed the attack as “illegitimate adventurism,” the U.S. and European allies stopped short of condemning Israel, instead urging “restraint on all sides.”
Iran’s UN envoy accused the West of “hypocrisy” for shielding Israel from accountability, while Nebenzia warned that “double standards on sovereignty will have catastrophic consequences.”
The emergency session ended without a resolution, but Moscow pledged to push for a formal censure of Israel. Analysts say Russia’s strong defense of Iran underscores its deepening alliance with Tehran amid global isolation over Ukraine.
