Politburo demand
withdraw dictatorial orders for lawmakers
Seeking to withdraw the authoritarian orders issued to MPs, the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) issued the following statement on 15 July:
The Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) condemns the dictatorial order which states that MPs cannot take any protest action in the premises of Parliament House.
Parliamentarians organize protest actions on a daily basis to present their views on all important issues related to the country and the people. It has been a democratic right of the parliamentarians ever since the Indian Parliament started functioning.
Along with this, by issuing a new directive to MPs, the list of non-parliamentary words has been extended and it has also included nouns like 'incompetence' often used against the government. Combined with that, this order of banning protest actions becomes the nakedest dictatorial attack on Parliament, on its independent functioning and on the integral rights of MPs.
This decision, taken arbitrarily, without consulting the political parties represented in the Parliament, is a blatantly undemocratic decision. Worse yet, it has been done just before the start of the Parliament session. The politburo of the CPI(M) urges the central government to immediately withdraw these undemocratic measures.
